Mirna Rubim, soprano spinto


Mirna Rubim, a Doctor of Voice Performance from the University of Michigan in 2004, has been an Associate Professor of Voice at UNIRIO since 1996. Dedicated to the vocal pedagogy applied in opera and musical theatre, she has received several awards in Brazil and abroad, including first place in the Second National Song Contest in Brasilia in 1994, and as a finalist in the Contest of the Association Verismo Opera at Carnegie Hall in 2004.

Her pedagogical contributions to the current music scene are extremely noteworthy. The celebrities who continue to benefit from her training are: Miguel Falabella, Marilia Pera, Isabella Bicalho, Alessandra Maestrini, Alessandra Verney, Kiara Sasso, Soraya Ravenle, Cris Gualda, Murilo Rosa, Gustavo Gasparani.

Mirna Rubim has performed at the Teatro Municipal of Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, Teatro Amazonas, Sala Cecilia Meireles, Centro Cultural Banco do Brazil. The magnitude and versatility of roles she's performed in her career include: Micaëla (Carmen) by Bizet; Liu (Turandot), Angelica (Suor Angelica), Fidelia (Edgar) and Anna (Le Villi) by Puccini; Donna Elvira (Don Giovanni), Pamina (Die Zauberflöte), and Contessa (Le Nozze di Figaro) by Mozart and Magda Sorel (The Consul) by Menotti.

In Brazil, Ms. Rubim studied voice under the tutelage of Diva Pieranti, Nelson Portella, Carol McDavitt and Eliane Sampaio; in the United States, with Martha Sheil and Marvin Keenze. She developed and perfected her repertoire with the following renowned coaches: Martin Katz, Nico Castel, Dalton Baldwin, J.J. Penna, and Ricardo Ballestero; and in 2003, with the famous American soprano, Grace Bumbry.

Her most relevant performances include the official opening of the Teatro Municipal of Rio de Janeiro in 2006 with Christ on the Mount of Olives by Beethoven; as Magna Peccatrix in Mahler's Eighth Symphony with the Orquestra Petrobrás Sinfônica at the Teatro Municipal of Rio de Janeiro, and the Aquarius Project at Copacabana Beach, with an audience of about twenty thousand people. In 2007 she recorded the bilingual CD / DVD A Floresta do Amazonas by Villa-Lobos conducted by Isaac Karabtchevsky with the Orquestra Petrobrás Sinfônica, launched in 2010.

In 2008 Mirna Rubim debuted as a singer in musical theater as Mother Superior in the The Sound of Music, which ran for two years in Rio and Sao Paulo, directed by Claudio Botelho and Charles Moeller. For her work in The Sound of Music, she was nominated for best musical theater actress in the Brazil Quality Award 2008. In that same year, she sang the role of Anna in the opera Le Villi, the first opera written by Giacomo Puccini, and Te Deum by Kodály, both at the Municipal Theater of São Paulo.

For the 2010-2011 season, Ms. Rubim is currently appearing in the musical La Cage aux Folles as Mme. Renaud, Mme. Dindon, and as voice teacher of Miguel Falabella and vocal coach of the choir.

Mirna Rubim and Alessandra Maestrini have the distinct privilege of staging the play Aria, which was written by Miguel Falabella especially for them.
